Maharashtra Government has extended the date of registration for installing High Security Registration Plate (HSRP). Earlier, the last date was March 31. Now, the same has been extended to April 30. Maharashtra has made it mandatory for vehicles registered before 2019 to have High-Security Registration Plates. Once HSRP is installed, the tampering of the same will be difficult. Secondly, it will have a specific code number which no one will be able to identify. The discrepancy in rates of such plates is being experienced. The charges to get the HSRP are different in Andhra Pradesh, Goa and others States. In Maharashtra, to get the HSRO costs more. When ‘The Hitavada’ contacted Vivek Bhimanwar, State Transport Commissioner, to clarify on difference in charges, said, “A lot of such messages are getting circulated. Some organisations also have raised the issue.

There are some technical points. These rates have different dimensions. They are based on size, modernisation of vehicle. We have specified the rates for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers. The four-wheelers category includes LMV and HMV. Both have different charges. We have submitted the charges to the central authority and then allotted the contract to the companies who have quoted less rates.” High-level committee has approved the rates. According to Bhimanwar, the charges of fitment are not being considered. In Maharashtra, Transport department is charging Rs 745 for four wheeler which includes fitment charges too.

In many other states, people have to pay additional amount for the fitment of the HSRP. This HSRP has a lock, because of which the tampering or transferring the plate to other vehicle would become difficult. Bhimanwar pointed out, “Before HSRPs, vehicle-thieves used fake, or fancy number plates. Now people won’t be able to use such plates as they would be fined heavily,” he added. HSRP would make the job of police easy as the tracking of the vehicle become possible as each plate is linked to the vehicle’s registration details. People have to do the registration on-line through Maharashtra’s transport department’s website.
