Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Day: Awareness, screening camps held at various health institutions
Staff Reporter :
On the occasion of GDM (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus) Day, awareness and GDM screening camps are being organized Monday at health institutions. Pregnant women and their families will be informed about the importance of GDM testing and early registration during pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes Mellitus is a serious issue among the causes of maternal and infant morbidity, which can have harmful effects on both the mother and the child's health.
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which elevated blood sugar is detected for the first time during pregnancy or where blood sugar increases during pregnancy.
Due to physical and hormonal changes during pregnancy, the body is unable to use sugar properly, leading to an increase in blood sugar levels. This condition is harmful to both the mother and the unborn child.
Dr Prabhakar Tiwari, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bhopal, stated that as soon as a woman learns that she is pregnant, she should contact an ASHA worker or a healthcare worker to ensure timely registration and testing. GDM testing is available free of charge at district hospitals, civil hospitals, community health centers, primary health centers, and Health and Wellness centers.
