The recent police raid on an illegal Holi party at Four Line Dhaba (FLD) on the Jabalpur-Hyderabad Outer Ring Road has brought to light the growing trend of unauthorised parties in the city. This is not just one case, as many such parties are being organised regularly -- some are openly promoted on social media while others operate through secret channels. According to sources, the city police have busted at least seven such illegal parties in 2024, all of which were advertised through social media platforms without securing permission from the police. The trend appears to be on the rise as the event organisers making massive profits through the illegal activities. These parties are not merely about entertainment but have also become dens for drug and liquor consumption. Most of these gatherings take place on the outskirts of Nagpur or in farmhouses in rural areas.

The FLD party, for instance, was promoted via the Instagram handle “zonein.” Many other social media accounts are also actively advertising such events, charging entry fees while failing to check whether the events have the necessary permissions from Nagpur City Police or the Excise Department. A senior police official confirmed that the social media promoters of the FLD event would also be booked for inviting people to an unauthorised gathering. “The event organisers make enormous profits by selling liquor and food at prices up to 500 per cent higher than market rates. They do not even allow attendees from bringing their own water bottles and force them to buy everything from the venue,” a source revealed. An eyewitness suggest that these parties often turn into hubs of illegal activities and even minors are seen excessively intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Shockingly, molestation has reportedly become a common occurrence at such events however, no one report the crime to the police for the reason best known to them.

How organisers evade the law

Illegal party organisers often have a strategy to evade police action. They store liquor and drugs in cars parked outside the event venues. In case of a police raid, these vehicles quickly leave the premises which make it difficult for the raiding party to seize evidence.

Stern action against illegal parties: DCP Rahul Maknikar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Detection, Rahul Maknikar, has issued a stern warning against such illegal gatherings. “The police would not allow these unauthorised parties to take place in the city. If citizens have any information about such parties, they should immediately report it to senior police officials,” he said. Additionally, social media handles promoting these illegal events will also be treated as co-accused in the cases, said DCP Maknikar.
