JASHPUR,
NESTLED at the foothills of Madheshwar Hill, the Madheshwar Mahadev Cave is a revered site, drawing thousands of devotees who seek spiritual blessings.
The cave witnesses a significant influx of visitors, especially during the auspicious month of Sawan.
Jashpur district is not only
well-known in Chhattisgarh, but has also gained recognition across the country for its breathtaking natural beauty. Often referred to as the ‘Switzerland of Chhattisgarh’, the region is home to vast mountain ranges, ancient rock paintings, stunning waterfalls, pristine rivers and picturesque valleys, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
The Madheshwar Mahadev Shivling, situated 119 km from Surguja division headquarters, 38 km from the Jashpur district headquarters, and just 3 km from Mayali Nature Camp in
Kunkuri block, has earned a remarkable distinction.
It has been recorded as the largest natural facsimile of a Shivling in the Golden Book of World Records.
The site holds special significance for devotees unable to visit Kailash Mansarovar, offering them a place for spiritual fulfillment. It is believed that the Shivling grows by 6 to 9 inches annually.
Recently, the Shiv Mahapuran Katha was organised at the site, attracting over two lakh devotees.
The area’s serene landscape, coupled with its religious significance, continues to draw pilgrims and tourists alike.
Environmental expert S P Yadav described the cave as both supernatural and mysterious, highlighting its unique geographical features.
He noted that the cave extends nearly 100 meters into the hill with low visibility in its interiors.
He also emphasised the immense tourism potential of the site, but raised concerns about the impact of mining activities on its natural beauty.
“The need of the hour is to develop basic infrastructure around the site. If proper facilities are provided, Madheshwar Mahadev Cave could become a major tourist destination, bringing recognition to Jashpur while generating employment opportunities for local residents,” Yadav said.
