Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, gave a new lease of life to a 28-year-old Congolese patient by successfully removing a massive stage IV oral cancer tumour, in the size of a mobile phone, measuring 15 cm X 8 cm, from his lower jaw in a complex eight-hour surgery. John, resident of Democratic Republic of Congo had been experiencing rapidly growing and debilitating swelling in his lower jaw for several months. Seeking medical assistance, he travelled to New Delhi, where he was diagnosed with a malignant tumour of the jawbone, necessitating immediate and specialized intervention.
He was referred to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, by a fellow Congolese citizen who’s relative had previously undergone a successful cancer surgery performed by Dr Abhinav Deshpande.
The surgery was performed by Dr Abhinav Deshpande, Director - Surgical Oncology & Robotic Onco Surgery along with Plastic Surgery team at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur
Speaking about the case, Dr Abhinav Deshpande said, “This was a challenging case due to the size and aggressiveness of the tumour, which was rapidly growing in the patient’s mouth. Our priority was to completely remove the cancer while also preserving the patient’s ability to eat, speak, and lead a fulfilling life.”
After a thorough evaluation of the patient’s condition, an intricate surgery was performed in coordination with the teams from Anaesthesiology and Plastic Surgery, led by Dr Shridhar Pillewan and Dr.
Tarun Deshbhratar. The procedure involved reconstructing the lower jaw using bone harvested from the patient’s leg. The patient has recovered well and was discharged on the tenth day post-surgery.
