Nestled amid the lush green hills of Mandla district and close to serene flow of Narmada river, Babaiha village is home to a fascinating blend of mythology, spirituality and natural wonder. The village, located near the backwaters of Bargi Dam, has gained attention for its mysterious hot water spring, believed to hold both healing properties and divine significance. According to local folklore, centuries ago when the region was covered in dense forests, a revered sage established his hermitage here. Known for his intense penance, the sage is said to have meditated for years amidst fire, unaffected by changing seasons. Over time, the impact of his spiritual practices began to influence the surroundings, warming the land, filling the air with energy and creating an unusual natural phenomenon. Legend holds that when the sage’s penance reached its peak, divine beings appeared and offered him a boon. Instead of asking for personal gain, the sage wished for a place where people could find relief from suffering, illness and mental distress. Pleased by his selflessness, the deities granted his wish.

The earth reportedly trembled and a stream of hot water emerged from the ground, rich with medicinal qualities. Today, that very spring continues to exist in Babaiha village, attracting visitors from across the region. Early mornings at the site offer a surreal glimpse, as steam rises from the water and sunlight reflects off it, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. While scientists attribute the phenomenon to geothermal activity, locals firmly believe it to be a manifestation of the sage’s penance. Many visitors come with faith, claiming relief from skin ailments and physical fatigue after bathing in the warm waters. The site has thus become a confluence of belief, wellness and tourism. Recognising its growing importance, the district administration has undertaken renovation and development work at the kund to improve facilities for visitors. The location also offers boating in the surrounding backwaters of Bargi Dam, adding to its appeal as a tourist destination. The dense forests and occasional sightings of wildlife in the area further enhance its charm. Situated about 18 kilometers from Mandla on the Mandla–Jabalpur road, this hot water spring is not just a scenic spot but an immersive experience, one that blends nature, history and spirituality into a unique narrative.
